Living Moments - N°5 Edition 2018

Did you ever get scared and think about stopping? Never! If I had, I wouldn’t have been able to get in the car. Fear makes you a danger to yourself and everybody else! I don’t believe that! After all, you’ve lost a few (!) friends on the racetrack. When I was doing F1 we buried at least one other driver a year. The safety precautions were still far be- low today’s standards for cars and on the track. However, I was, and still am, a master of suppression and not thinking about things. Fear, prob- lems and uncertainty never got into the car with me. That’s probably how I survived the 45 years. Where does this energy come from? I’ve always looked for something to bal- ance out extreme speed andmaximum concentration. Away from the track I really need my retreat, where I can switch off and recharge my batteries. What does “retreat” mean for you? It’s more like “WHO” is my retreat. One thousand percent my wife, shortly followed by our two four-leg- ged friends. Cooper is my best friend in the whole world and little Amy is our ray of sunshine. To answer your question about “WHERE”, just look around you. Every moment that I’m not in the car, I enjoy spending at home, here in the mountains at Wilder Kaiser. It’s a very unusual house. How did you come up with the idea of build- ing a “Canadian log home” in the Tyrolean Mountains? Work took me to Canada a lot. I immediately fell in love with the breathtaking wilderness of the Yu- kon Territories. We had countless “Indiana Jones and MacGyver” ad- ventures there with my two sons. Campfires, fishing, being hunted by, rather than hunting bears (a hearty laugh says “that’s another story”). I’m absolutely fascinated by the construction method itself.
