I wasn’t even thirty years old then, a young actor with a distinctive self-confidence, and I didn’t want to put up with Rühmann, the great actor. He supposedly had the contractual right to have them cut out unpleasant scenes of colleagues in the movies. “Not with me, Mr Rühmann!” – that was my stance, until it came to a first, and by the way, happy, collaboration.
