7TaTYR 8ZXPY_^ Edition 2 · 2014 132 Riedel, the 300 year-old family business credited with revolutionising glassware for the enjoyment of wine, announces the development of its new grape varietal specific collection, the Veritas Series. George Riedel (owner of Riedel Glassworks) challenged his Weiden factory chief engineer Franz Schmid, and his world class technicians in Weiden, to execute, in lead crystal, the finest and lightest machine-blown lead crystal glasses ever made. The Weiden factory, located in Bavaria, Germany and one of four manufacturing plants owned by Riedel Glassworks, was briefed that, not only should the Veritas range be visually stunning and a delight to hold, but should also be price- competitive against hand-made products from low cost manufacturing countries. The spectacular result is Veritas. A glass collection 15% taller than Vinum (Riedel's first machine- made line introduced in 1986) but 25% lighter and finer, whilst maintaining dishwasher safety, break resistance and being suitable for long-term daily use at home. George Riedel, 10 th generation glassmaker, says about his latest creation; “Veritas combines the charm of a hand-made glass with the consistent accuracy only a machine-made glass can achieve.” Veritas bowls are wine tools, with the experience of three generations and with wine knowledge acquired over 60 years. The series includes Caber- net Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and Viognier/ Chardonnay. For the first time, two glasses are offered for Pinot Noir and Syrah in this collection – the wines are from both the Old World and the New World. As another premier, a champagne wine glass is part of the collection. “The concept champagne wine glass was chosen deliberately”, Maximilian Riedel explains, “because champagne, first and foremost is wine.
